Southeast Asian Tobacco Control Program

FCNA, under a subcontract from the California Health Collaborative Foundations, is conducting a Southeast Asian Tobacco Control Program.

The Southeast Asian population of Fresno is predominantly Hmong with significant numbers of Laotian and Cambodian.  Southeast Asian are at risk for environment tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure due to high rates of tobacco use within their large and young families.  Prevention of ETS exposure among Southeast Asian is complicated by cultural supports for continued smoking in homes with little knowledge of and regard for the health impact of non-smoking family members, particularly infants and young children.

Control of tobacco smoking is challenged by the social and cultural dynamics within Southeast Asian families.  Overcoming individuals, interpersonal, normative, and broader organizations and community level factors.  The project operates through presentation of workshops to local Southeast Asian community organization and churches, and through media presentations in the appropriate Southeast Asian languages.  Presentation are also made in homes.

This project is funded for five years from March 1, 1997 - June 30, 2001, with funds from the tobacco Tax Health Protection Act of 1988.
