March/April Lightning bolt Newsflash

What a busy time for Room 5! We have finished our Mission Social Studies Units. All of the models were just wonderful. We will have them on display in Room 5 or the Cafeteria for everyone who would like to view them. The students put a lot of work into their models and it shows.

On March 7th we ent on a field trip to The Fresno Philharmonic, The Legion of Valor Museum and Woodward Park. The Philharmonic is a favorite trip for 4-5-6 grades and the Museum is an added bonus this year. On April 4th , Room 5 will be going to Kings Canyon National Forest to wind up a unit on natural habitats for science.

I look forward to meeting with our parents during Conference Week, March 18-22. I always like to discuss your concerns about your child's progression with you whenever I can.

For Social Studies, the 4th grade will be moving into California Statehood and the Gold Rush. It is a particular favorite of the students as we "pan" for gold here at school. In Reading we are still working on "Little House on the Prairie" and then will move onto "Island of the Blue Dolphins" which coincides with our Science Unit of Underwater Habitats. See you at March Conferences!

Links to Sites about California Missions
  • Biography of Father Serra
  • California History Resources -- a page from the "History Through Literature," this is a list of literature resources that teach about California history.
  • California Mission Studies Association -- This is a fairly exhaustive hot link list of sites pertaining to California Missions. Many are good for students, all are excellent resources for teacher preparation.
  • The California Missions -- a list of all 21 missions with short annotation on many of them.
  • California's Missions -- Picture postcards of all 21 missions and other information. One of the best features is the "Visiting the Missions" link which shows a chart of all the missions, when they were founded, and what condition they are in now.
  • Pictures of California Missions -- This site features historic photographs of all 21 California Missions, from as early as 1895, as well as an essay about their founding, a map, etc.
  • Virtual Tour of the California Missions -- See pictures of each of the missions as the guides go on their bicycle tour. This was originally done as a "real time" activity with fourth grade classes. It is still a work in progress.
